Dr. Allen has provided senior mentorship to research teams investigating relationships cardiovascular fitness, body composition and adiposecompartmentalization, and insulin resistance (IR) in children of various ages and ethnicities. The research group mentored by Dr. Allen has alsodeveloped a program for statewide assessment, reporting, and analysis of childhood fitness based on in-school testing. His team has collaboratedextensively with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and other state-wide agencies and communities to develop, implement, andevaluate school-based interventions during the past 10 years. In addition, Dr. Allen mentors several projects (with Dr. Reeder) investigating MRI-determined site-specific deposition of adipose tissue in children, its effect on insulin resistance and other metabolic derangements, and its relationship toethnicity and other genetic factors.
