Diabetes is a treatable disease that continues to increase in prevalence, alongside the obesity epidemic, and accounts for substantial healthcare costs in Wisconsin currently estimated at $3.9 billion. The UW-Madison campus has significant strengths in research, education, and clinical care in diabetes and related disease and is poised to have a significant impact on this devastating disease nationally and within our state.
The UW-Madison Comprehensive Diabetes Center aims to leverage state of the art expertise in numerous areas, including pancreatic islet biology, cellular metabolism, advanced imaging, metabolomics and proteomics, stem cell biology, transplantation, and epigenetics to tackle important problems in diabetes. By connecting basic scientists with clinical and translational researchers, we hope to advance discoveries in diabetes to clinical applications.
