Aging is a strong risk factor for diabetes. Many of the changes that occur with aging, such as changes in body composition and changes in systemic metabolism, predispose to metabolic disease and diabetes. Our research has investigated early events in the spontaneous development of insulin resistance in rhesus monkeys and has identified changes in circulating lipids even in advance of impaired fasting glucose. Ongoing studies seek to a) identify conserved changes in human lipid profiles as a function of insulin resistance and b) explore the molecular basis for changes in lipid homeostasis in mouse models.
