As Research Director of UW-Madison’s Fundus Photograph Reading Center (FPRC), I am involved in clinical trial imaging endpoints for diabetic retinopathy, with a focus on employing new imaging techniques to understand the natural history and prognostic markers. We provide retinal imaging-dependent outcomes for industry-sponsored therapeutic trials. We also monitor the progression of diabetes-related ocular complications in NIH-funded multi-center long-term diabetes studies such as Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS), Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC), and adolescent diabetes (TODAY). Additionally, I participate as study PI and provide reference standards for the development of diabetic retinopathy screening algorithms using Artificial Intelligence. This includes collaboration with various diagnostic companies for FDA validation studies on AI software as well as internal UW collaboration to develop machine learning algorithms for retinopathy assessment. Lastly, I collaborate with consortium groups to advance the field of diabetic retinopathy severity scales, validating new imaging techniques and biomarkers.
