I lead a health-services research group focused on identifying and addressing barriers to obesity treatment. There are 100+ million Americans who meet criteria for obesity, which is a major contributor to the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes. I am also a bariatric surgeon at UW-Madison as well as the Chief of General Surgery at William S. Middleton VA, which has allowed me to work with clinical and research leaders within the Veterans Health Administration system. Bariatric surgery is a highly effective treatment for type 2 diabetes in patients with obesity.
