My research in ocular telemedicine research seeks to directly alleviate the burden of blindness nationwide by expanding access to vision-saving eye care. Teleophthalmology can greatly expand access to eye care, particularly among underserved populations, but is underutilized in rural multi-payer health settings even after this technology is made available to patients. There is an urgent need to identify methods for sustaining the effectiveness of teleophthalmology and scale-up nationwide adoption. Our team studies methods for increasing the use of telemedicine-based diabetic eye screening in primary care clinics to prevent blindness in underserved populations.
