I study the sulfonylurea receptor (SUR) and KATP channels in cardiovascular disease, which are also major pathways involved in pancreatic insulin secretion. Specifically, we study a splice variant of the SUR protein that appears to target the mitochondria and influence the activation of mitoKATP. Our research seeks to understand how this splice variant may affect metabolism as a whole and whether modulation of SUR can improve the outcome of patients with heart disease.
