My primary focus is on the genetic and pathologic basis of a spontaneous peripheral neuropathy that is commonly seen in Labrador retrievers. This work is a part of one-health medicine, as it informs both veterinary and human disease. It appears this disease is an axonopathy, which broadly associates with peripheral neuropathies seen in diabetics. My research is thus not directly studying diabetes, but rather peripheral neuropathy, which is an important co-morbidity. I do have interest in investigating diabetes-associated peripheral neuropathy in dogs, which is a readily available spontaneous large animal model that is really underutilized in diabetic research.
